Competition complaint against Apple Pay in Europe

The European Union Commission noted that there have been complaints that Apple is abusing its dominant position in mobile wallets for its payment services.

According to Bloomberg’s report, the company has faced an official complaint from the European Union that its services that allow users to pay directly on iPhones are restricted.

If these complaints are confirmed, the company will have to pay a serious competition penalty in Europe.

European Union Commission Senior Vice President for Competition Margrethe Vestager stated that there are indications that third parties are prevented from accessing the technology necessary to develop mobile payment solutions that rival Apple’s payment services on Apple-branded devices.

This draft of the EU included the pioneering findings that the company hinders competition to the advantage of its own solutions.

The Apple Pay investigation was within the scope of the two-part investigation opened by the EU in June 2020.
